These woodcuts focus on the banality of everyday life, targeting characters with particular traits and moods.
I became aware of my journeys; where urban energies seem to exercise their greatest influence on people. We negotiate these times by de-personalising others around us, to make our journey seem as though it doesn’t exist. These are curious moments where people have to engage in some way with each other even though everyone is desperate not to. We share seats, stand so close we touch, staring, but at the same time trying hard not to. This helps to conjure up narratives, of stranger’s lives and thoughts sometimes. Figures are watched from behind, faces rarely seen. By recording the banality of the everyday, a tension is created through the sensation of being in a crowd and the invisibility to others around. Travelling on trains, buses and the tube, I photograph and draw the unaware that are sharing these travelling experiences with me. |
